When I speak Spanish, they say my accent is Argentinian. This is the coolest thing in the world because Argentina has only brought me good things. Here is one of them: I was 13 years old when I went there to play basketball in Pergamino, a countryside town 155 miles from Buenos Aires, in the east. It was my first trip outside Brazil. First time I got on a plane. First time I spent a week away from home with no relatives around. First time I saw people speaking a language other than Portuguese.
*
And it was the first time I'd woke up and had no idea what my day would be like - and how I enjoyed that feeling, still unaware that I would chase it forever as a good Sagittarius.
*
I genuinely believe those seven days in Argentina in 1998 fed with water, sun and soil, a tiny seed inside me that led me to want to live abroad - and 15 years later, here I am writing this piece while living 5.000 miles from where I was born.
*
In the following year of my basketball adventure in the land of Maradona, it was time for the Argentine boys to leave Pergamino and get on a plane to play basketball in my city in Brazil, a countryside town called Franca, 310 miles from São Paulo.
*
One of these guys, Ricardo, was put to sleep at my house during his stay there. We became instant friends, and when, a week later, he returned to his home in Argentina, it was inevitable that we would never see each other again.
*
But situations that could be featured in a movie helped us meet many different times after that. Then, one day, he asked me to be his son’s godfather.
*
The last time I was in Pergamino was for the little Joaquín baptism, two months before the pandemic hit the world. We haven’t been together since then.
*
I’ve been a distant godfather and a distant friend lately. But I hope this will work as it did to his father and me in the past, so this love will survive the miles of land and sea that separate us (and I mean only physically separated because life is not just what is physical, but you know that for sure).
*
My relationship with Ricardo and Joaquín is somewhat unlikely, yet it exists. It's one of the miracles that happened in my life. To know about the existence of miracles. The luck of having such a fantastic friend and the honour of having a godson. I owe all these to Argentina.
*
Another gift Argentina gave me was feeling love for another language. Music has played an essential role in showing me how beautiful and powerful the Argentinian Spanish tongue is. Artists like my all-time Argentinian favourite, Fito Paez, Charly Garcia, Los Pericos, Soda Stereo, Spinetta, and more recently, Lola Parda and Juana Aguirre. And I won’t even mention their literature (think of Borges or Piglia) or cinema (Juan José Campanella or Pablo Trapero).

Fast-forward to the end of 2023. I got invited to curate music for a luxury brand with more than 1000 stores worldwide. They sought a music curator to bring a South American flavour to the store's playlists. It took me almost three months researching contemporary indie pop, pop and electronic production from Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, Peru, Venezuela, Bolivia, Brazil - and, of course, Argentina.
*
Simultaneously, I started researching new Argentinian songs that didn’t exactly fit into the brand’s identity, and by that, I mean folkloric, indie pop, mixtures of Latin with an African or Jamaican sonority and more experimental tunes. This has led me to some unexpected favourites. I have never heard most of them before. Nevertheless, they all made me feel at home. Quickly, I realised why: Argentinian music is a passport that gives me full access to Ricardo, Joaquín and our history together. It just takes me to them.
*
I've compiled a playlist for this 7th edition of my newsletter, Distante. It comes with my top musical finds on new Argentinian music. All of them were released in 2023. I hope this selection will give you a good idea of how Argentinians continue to produce some of the best music in the world despite suffering from the cloud of inequality and other problems that never go away from our South American heavens - a miracle.

(This edition comes out in the middle of a house move. A kind of miracle…)
Porque a Argentina só me trouxe coisas boas.
