- Uau! Olha só essa capa!
- Wow! Check out this cover!
We had just walked into a record shop (it was Rough Trade, in Notting Hill) and Ju was dashing out to get a closer look at the picture of a vinyl record that was on display on the wall.
- The vinyl record is very interesting because it helps highlight the work that has been done on the cover.
After saying that, she just stood there for a while, very focused, observing the details of the cover like one facing a painting at an exhibition. (Unfortunately, I didn't catch the name of the album).
A few days later, an artist from Pequeno Imprevisto wrote to apologise: he sent us the wrong artwork for the song we would be releasing in a few weeks, and wanted to know if there was still time to change it. In between texts, he wrote down:
- It's just that the cover I sent you shows a text that's too small and unreadable… but does it make any difference for the listeners?
That's a very good question. Since music streaming consumption has become widespread - nowadays even my parents can't live without their Spotify account -, the idea that an album cover is something important has been restricted to the production core, meaning that the artist thinks it's important to design the cover, the label believes it's important that the cover is appealing and, hopefully, some fans also believe it's important that the work is presented with a cool cover. And I suppose that's it.
We all know it wasn't always like this. People from pre-internet era will tell you that they once decided to buy an album because they were attracted by the cover - the music inside, at least in a first moment, didn't matter that much (or the excitement of imagining what kind of music would be on it, and then going home to find out, that was the fun). Those who are from the pre-streaming-for-all era - my case - will recount that they loved downloading MP3s and then assembling the albums song by song and adding the cover, back cover and credits into a folder on the computer - my case too.
An exhibition currently taking place here in London helped me to remember the importance of covers. From The Record, on display until Sunday at The Photographers Gallery, explores the connection between music, photography and design over the years, from the covers of the first American blues albums, released in the 30s and 40s, to the most iconic works of cover art: the Velvet Underground's banana (Andy Warhol's work) and the Beatles crossing the street (photo by Iain Macmillan).
From The Record is obviously focused on UK production and only makes room for the US or one or two items from Spain. The expography is simple: the covers are displayed according to themes (a decade, or a record company, or a photographer). At certain moments, the records appear totally open, so that the visitor can see the work that has been done inside; at others, two prints have been laid out, so that one can appreciate the visual interplay between cover and back cover. It is also a lean exhibition - the room is almost the size of a record shop, which, by the way, made me realise that from now on I will look at every record shop as an exhibition room.
Until the 2010s, or thereabouts, an album cover made a huge difference in the world: there were political covers that were censored (such as Michael Vosse's Beggars Banquet, by the Rolling Stones) or considered revolutionary, like the ones created by the British design group Hipgnosis, who created one classic cover after another in the 1970s (those famous Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin covers? It was them). Did you know that even Picasso and Miró have designed record covers? It was once very serious business.
Vagando e divagando
Wandering and rambling
I went for a walk after the exhibition. While I was crossing the busy streets around the gallery, I wondered about the current immateriality of music, which makes it unviable the multi-sensorial experience that covers used to give us, and I even recalled books, this object that has not been taken by digital conversations, and where the cover has not lost its majesty; I also thought that, in fact, vinyl is now back to stay, and this may provide more interesting artistic experiences; even though production is very expensive and consumption is very niched. But, perhaps beyond all that, seeing those records on the wall made me wonder about music itself. What is it today?
A música, aliás, me lembra a natureza…
Music is such a complex human invention, which requires the perspiration of so many people to cease being an idea and become something real; and, at the same time, it is a very simple entity, which requires nothing (even the silence is music). Music, by the way, reminds me of nature... I keep thinking about the Amazon on fire and the many artists chasing "likes" and I keep thinking the same thing: for God's sake, this is a crime.
But I'm digressing. What I mean is: what else in this world do we know that carries so many special attributes? Isn't it a bit unbelievable that music is becoming a mere tool to enrich billionaire companies? It's hard not to associate the space currently reserved for record covers - properly called thumbnail - to the contemporary weakening of music, the dilution of its political, social and cultural role by adopting the productive logics of social networks. Moreover, it seems to perfectly symbolise the tiny financial return that the platforms give to artists. A dimension, by the way, inversely proportional to the illusion that the best way for those who want to make a living from music today is to work for the algorithm. I don't know an artist who is either rich or glad for playing this game, for agreeing that the cover of his record is an unreadable file.
(Just for the record, last month in Madrid we accidentally stumbled upon the new permanent exhibition at the Reina Sofía Museum, called "Enemies of poetry: resistance in Latin America". Right at the entrance to the venue, what exactly was there representing Brazil next to Hélio Oiticica's poem-flag? The record covers).
A playlist that has everything to do with it
Eu estou descobrindo muitas coisas boas nela:
The Photographers Gallery created a playlist inspired by the exhibition. I found a great deal of good stuff on it. It's worth a listen here:

Great article, thanks for putting your thoughts into words. You reminded me of the value I gave to album covers, in addition to CD booklets, of inestimable value.
